How do LED TVs work?

There are quite a few technologies for flatscreens. But the basic theory is the same. They work by having a source of light incident upon some chemical on the TV screen that emits light in reaction. This light is variously modulated and passed through pixels of red, green or blue with different intensities and transparencies to produce the pictures on the TV screen. Since this piece is about LED TVs, their working will be explained in brief.

Set-up

  • LED screens to work on the same principle as LCDs, the only difference being the use of light-emitting diodes(LEDs) as backlight instead of cold cathode fluorescent lamps(CCFLs).
  • LEDs employ 2 glass filters arranged to face each other, with their outer faces covered by a polarizing film and their inner faces grated. The grating is in the form of microscopic grooves, formed by rubbing a special polymer on their surface, and in the same direction as the polarizing film.
  • The space between the glass filters are filled with a twisted nematic type thermotropic liquid crystal, which consists of molecules in a specific alignment, but still flexible in movement, that is twisted in shape. These molecules can untwist by varying degrees proportionally on the application of a range of electric current.
  • Between the nematic liquid layer and each glass, filter are inserted electrodes to exert this electric current. The back electrode is the negative one(cathode), in the shape of a rectangular slab while the front one is the positive electrode(anode) and is in the shape of a mesh, each point of intersection of the vertical and horizontal rods representing a cell that forms a pixel. Thus a matrix or array of dots is formed between the glass filters.
  • There is also a mirror right at the back and a glass cover for image display in front.

Mechanism

  • The glass filters are so placed that their polarization planes are at right angles, i.e., the light that passes through the back filter should get blocked by the front filter.
  • The molecules of the layer of liquid in touch with the back filter thus gets aligned by the grooves in a certain direction, while those in contact with the front filter gets aligned in the perpendicular direction, with the molecules of the layers in between gradually twisting from one direction to the other in a gradient form.
  • Any light passing through the back filter will be polarized in a certain direction and the molecules in each layer will change that direction in small amounts to match their own angle so that by the time it reaches the front filter, the direction of vibration of the light waves have become the same as that of the filter.

Working

  • When the screen is not in operation, external light enters the screen and is reflected back by the mirror.
  • When it is turned on and an electric current is applied, the molecules untwist by a degree determined by the strength of the current between a threshold and a saturation level. This causes light from the LED, that was polarized in a certain plane by the back filter to also align according to the angles of the molecules of each layer as the light, which, however no longer match that of the front filter. The light fails to pass through, producing a dark pixel.
  • But if no current is applied at the intersection, the molecules remain twisted as before and the plane of the light gets bent slowly from the angle of the back filter to that of the front filter and passes through, forming a light pixel.
  • Different levels of current untwist the molecules to different degrees, thus modulating the amount of light for a given pixel.
  • Each pixel consists of 3 dots of red, green and blue. The colour of a pixel and its brightness is determined by which coloured dot the light passes through and the magnitude of the electric current applied at the intersection.

LED TVs can be back-lit or edge-lit. Back-lit TVs have the LED bulbs distributed all along the back of the screen, while edge-lit TVs have the LEDs lined along the edge of the TV. Needless to say, back-lit TVs can give better colour, contrast and saturation, as well as a wider viewing angle.
